Missy Raines and the New Hip

"The music? Think a jazzier Nickel Creek, or a (slightly) feistier Alison Brown."
-San Jose Mercury News

Missy Raines is now stepping out to make a longtime dream come true: creating a fusion of bluegrass virtuosity, jazz-tinged groove and a song-driven sensibility with a hot band, “The New Hip”.

Missy is a seven time International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year

Po’ Girl

They started out as flop house roommates in Vancouver, they were a duo that wanted to sing “creaky old jazz tunes”. Two years later, this now five piece band they have released three highly acclaimed albums full of  Folk, Jazz, Old R&B and swing tunes. They are the Po’ Girls one of Canada’s Finest exports. And the will soon be returning to Ann Arbor, to appear at the Ark on February 28.  I saw their last performance at the Ark and it’s not to be missed. I don’t know if I ever saw a band having more fun on stage.

“No Shame ” From their most recent CD “Home to You”.

Dick Siegel

This next artist is a 25 year veteran of the Detroit Music scene that I somehow have managed to avoid hearing live until last night. Dick Siegel won the best New Folk Artist award at the 1991 Kerrville Folk Festival, and became a member of the Detroit Music Hall of Fame after winning multiple Detroit Music Awards. Siegel's music has featured on nationally syndicated shows such as NPR's All Things Considered and Mountain Stage. His albums and shows feature an eclectic blend of Folk, Jazz, Bebop, swing, country and Blues. He is by far the most versatile songwriter I have ever heard.

Here he is performing “Starlight Rodeo” from his release “A Little Pain Never Hurt”.

Karen Dalton

Karen Dalton was an American folk singer and banjo player associated with the Hardline Drive, Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 60s. Her bluesy, world-weary voice is often compared to that of Billie Holiday. She sang blues, folk, country, pop, and Motown.  This song is from her second album, In My Own Time released in 1971 and re-released in 2006. She struggled with drugs and alcohol for many years and died in 1993 after an eight-year battle with AIDS.  Here she is performing “Katie Cruel”  from “In My Own Time”.
