Hi. I'm Steven Johnson from Michigan Folk Live. I'd like to welcome you to another MichiganFolkLive podcast. This is a series of podcasts presented by Michigan Folk Live, features both National touring acts and local Michigan Artists. With this podcast we are going focus primarily on artists who are touring Michigan in February 2008.

Michigan Folk Live Intro – Laura Bates and Brandon Foot Shenandoah

Tim Grimm – The Peoples Highway

Tim Grim is stage/TV/ and Movie Actor who has a list of credits as long as my arm.  Sometime around 2000 Tim and his wife decided they didn’t want to raise their kids in Hollyweird. So they packed up and moved back to Indiana. They bought a farm not far from where they grew up. Soon after, Tim picked up his guitar and started writing songs again.  Tim will be performing at the house concert series “Music Under the Pines” in Haslett on February 9th.
Here is Tim doing a song from his most recent CD  “The Back Fields” the song is titled “The People’s Highway”.

Po’ Girl

They started out as flop house roommates in Vancouver, they were a duo that wanted to sing “creaky old jazz tunes”. Two years later, this now five piece band they have released three highly acclaimed albums full of  Folk, Jazz, Old R&B and swing tunes. They are the Po’ Girls one of Canada’s Finest exports. And the will soon be returning to Ann Arbor, to appear at the Ark on February 28.  I saw their last performance at the Ark and it’s not to be missed. I don’t know if I ever saw a band having more fun on stage.

“Go On and Pass Me By” From their most recent CD “Home to You”.

“Green Apples” also from the CD “Home to You”.

Diana Jones –

Until today I was under the impression that this Artist, Diana Jones,  released her first album ”A Remembrance of You” in 2006.  But it’s actually her third solo release and the one that has garnered her both national attention and critical success. After the release of ”A Remembrance of You”, Diana won "New Folk" songwriting competition at the 2006 Kerrville Folk Festival. Her song "Pony" was nominated as "Song of the Year" by the North American Folk Alliance, and Jones herself was nominated as "Emerging Artist of the Year" for 2006.  She will be returning to Michigan to perform at Ortonville’s “Folk with Shades of Blue” concert series on February 15th. Once again opening for her that night will be Michigan’s own country duo “The Milroys”.  This next song is “Put  All My Money on You”  I heard Diana Jones explain it’s about betting everything on herself in her music career. Diana, I think that’s a pretty good bet! Here is Diana performing “Put  All My Money on You”.

DIANA JONES: My Remembrance of You

Mustard’s Retreat – Solitary Beach

Here is a fabulous Michigan duo that have been performing some of Michigan’s most cherished concerts and producing some of Michigan’s finest recordings for over 30 years. David Tamulevich and Michael Hough, better known as Mustard’s Retreat, produce lively energetic concerts that always involve a heaping dose of audience participation. Maybe that’s why the Michigan Times described theirs shows a “Music for what Ails You”.

Joan Osborne

Joan Osborne is best known for her amazing 1995 Album “Relish, that featured “Folk, Pop and  Blues” influences. In 2006 she went to Nashville and produced her first unabashedly Country recording “Pretty Little Stranger”. Here she is with the title cut from that CD.

Also performing St. Teresa -  BBC Series The Transatlantic Sessions- 3

Darrell Scott

In the last 10 years Darrell Scot has become one of Nashville’ most sought after songwriter’s and session players. But if you are not familiar with his performances you are really missing out. I love everything he produces and was thrilled when I got permission to include his music in the podcasts. This first song is from the beautifully produced BBC series “The Transatlantic Sessions”. It’s difficult to find but they are available through the MichiganFolkLIve music store.  Here is Darrell Scott performing “The Open Door”

This next song was written by the late Stuart Adamson. From his most recent CD “The Invisible Man” here is Darrell Scott with a splendid interpretation of “Shattered Cross”.

Patchouli

This Chicago/Minnesota Duo “Patchouli” has a sound that so rich and vibrant it’s almost organic. And why not when they met Julie Patchouli was an Ethno-botanist poet and Bruce Hecksel studied theology and music. Together they have put Julie’s words to rich, complex rhythms that lift the human spirit. Is it Folk? Is it Jazz? Is it new Age? Yes. It’s a complex blend of all of those and it’s beautiful.
