MJ Bishop
MJ Bishop is an acoustic folk/alt-country solo artist originally from the Michigan’s Upper Peninsula who is now based in Seattle, Washington. She has performed steadily since 1998 in and around Seattle and has shared the stage with many Northwest musicians, and has also taken her music to Michigan, Florida, Montana, Idaho and Oregon.
Bishop grew up in a small town on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Music at home included jazz standards, Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and every family celebration included singing (lots of harmonizing!) and playing into the wee hours of the morning. She name as her influences Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Lucinda Williams.
The last nine years have been busy for Bishop as she assembled a band, maintained a full performance schedule, began touring as a solo act, and continued songwriting. She is now working on her third CD, yet unnamed, that will be released in 2008. From that yet unmade CD here is a cut titled “Ode to Big Blue”
That was MJ Bishop performing “Ode to Big Blue”. MJ Bishop will be touring Michigan in April or May this year. Will be sure to have her back on the podcast and provide you some concert details when they become available.

Billy Brandt
This next artist, Billy Brandt, is lead guitarist for Grievous Angel and The Jill Jack Band, a record producer, and studio instrumentalist, who after 30 years is stepping into the spotlight with his recently released CD “The Mission Band” You have multiple opportunities to catch this talented Artist as he is one of the hardest working performers on the Michigan Music scene.

Bill Bynum
This Detroit native, bluegrass/country picker plays music like he was raised in the West Tennessee or Arkansas countyside where his parents were born. Bill Bynum has a big month ahead as he is releasing his first CD “Daddy’s Word” at the famed Ann Arbor folk club, The Ark, on January 19th.
Here is Bill performing “Lovin’ You” from his inaugural CD, “Daddy’s Word”.
Motor City Sidestrokers
The Motor City Sidestrokers are an audience favorite that loves to share their passion for old-time, depression era music. Audiences can count seeing on this talented string band put on a infectious, high energy, rowdy performance. Their concerts can be summed up in three words… fun, fun, fun.
You can catch this musical mayhem at two January performances. On Friday, January 25, at Stage 1210, in Lansing’s Old Town district they will appear with the Heftones. On Saturday, January, 26 they will perform at Johnny's Speakeasy, in Ann Arbor with The Milroys and Doug and Telisha Williams (this will be a great show!!!).
Here are the Motor City Sidestrokers performing “Frozen Lightening”.
The Milroys
The Milroys are an Americana/Country group that can spin a dark and sinister yarn and follow it up with a foot stompin gospel tune. They are hard to categorize but not hard to like. They are CJ and John Milroy a charismatic duo, who are fun to watch, but also great to listen too.

Emily Kurn
She describes herself as quirky, intelligent, and rootsy, but Emily Kurn, a 2007 Kerrville New Folk Finalist and 2nd Place Woody Guthrie Songwriting Contest Winner is one of the new exciting voices of folk music. Kurn's new release, "Things Change," charted 5 consecutive months on the FOLK-DJ Charts. In July, it charted at #6, a spot usually held by artists on a major record label. Making her home in Anchorage, She is the first Alaskan artist to appear on the MichiganFolkLive podcasts.
Here she is performing ‘Piano Hands” from her recent release “Things Change”.

The Hummingbirds
This talented country duo reports that they get a lot of their inspiration from classic country music of the 50s and 60s. The Hummingbirds, Rachael Lynn and Steven Grant Wood, certainly incorporate a lot of that classic country sound into their stage shows and recordings. I know I won’t ruffle any feathers if I describe them as one of Michigan’s finest country bands. You have four opportunities to enjoy them this month.

Chris Smither
This artist has been plying his brand of Mississippi Bayou Blues for over four decades on the highways and byways of America. I count my self fortunate to have seen several of his performances over the years. I don’t know what is stronger his eloquent voice, finger-picken guitar playing or his crafty lyrics. They make one heck of a package. Here is Chris Smither performing “Origin of Species” from his “Leave The Light On” release.

Dave Boutette
Dave Boutette is a Michigan musician who describes himself as "98% Honest Midwestern Songcraft". When I catch up with him I’m going to have to ask him about the other 2%.

Doug and Telisha Williams
Husband and Wife ,Doug and Telisha Williams embody the true Southern songwriting tradition. They play what they call Fuel Injected Folk. This duo makes the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia their home. Their roots are real, their words are true, and their energy is contagious. On their new record “Rope Around my Heart”, Doug and Telisha gathered a stellar group of musicians to lend their talents, including Darrell Scott, Dennis Crouch, Kenny Malone, Eamon McLoughlin and Becki Williams.
Im excited about this record, its very honest, almost raw, says Doug, Some of these songs come from pretty shadowy places. Of course, it isn’t all dark and depressing, There are a couple of happy songs! Even a love song, and its honest, too! notes Telisha.

Malinky
This next group, Malinky, is a highy regarded Scottish five piece group that is touring Michigan this month. They are known for their spirited, energetic take on Scots and English traditional ballads as well as original song writing and accomplished instrumentals.
They will be appearing at Thursday, January 17 at the Ark in Ann Arbor.
Here is the Scottish group Malinky performing “King Orfeo” a several hundred year old Scottish ballad about King Orfeo who while away hunting loses his Queen Isabella to the Fairy King. After years of searching he spys her spirit in the woods, and he break out his pipes and plays. The Fairy King is overwhelmed by his playing and grants him anything he wishes and so his Isabella is restored to him.

Two Loons for Tea
This Seattle folk/pop group approached us about being on the podcast, and I found a perfect tune to bring up the end of the podcast on an upbeat note. Which is the way we like to do it. So here is “Two Loons for Tea” with another Michigan Folk Live first, a song about monkeys. From their latest release “Nine Lucid Dreams” a song simply titled “Monkey”, here is “Two Loons For Tea”.

Darol Anger
This visionary instrumentalist calls himself a “Peripatetic Freestyle Fiddler and Legendary Weirdo". What he is, is a fiddle savant. Here to end today’s podcast is Darol Anger performing his magic on a traditional folk tune “Wayfaring Stranger”
Thank you to all the talented Artists who particpated in our podcast!
We are not worthy!!
