What can I say about this next group? It’s composed of three thirteen year-old instrumentalists that play like they were born with their instruments in their hands. Diana Jones
Here is a song from a MichiganFolkLive favorite “Diana Jones” . This song was commissioned by the Everettville Historical Association, in West Virginia. The song was played at a dedication ceremony to raise funds for a Memorial and Park that will honor the 149 miners who died in a Mining accident in April 30, 1927. While Diana agreed to write the song she was struggling with it. That was until she given a note that was written by of the miners Henry Russell. Unlike many of the miners Henry did not die in the explosion that sealed the mine but instead lay trapped underground. Knowing he was dying he took pieces of coal and paper from empty sacks and wrote a note to his wife that was found inside his lunch box. After receiving a copy of this note Diana Jones said “The song almost wrote itself”. Instead of struggling to find the words she had the words right in front of her and the song wrote itself in about fifteen minutes. Until now that song has only been available as a free download at several places on the web. It is being released on Diana Jones new record that should be available next January and it has also been recorded by Joan Baez on her new recording “Day after Tomorrow” that is available now.
Here is Diana Jones performing “Henry Russell’s Last Words.

Dick Siegel
I was driving home the other day and it was one of those beautiful sunny fall days. I was taking full advantage of the warm temperatures and had the car’s convertible top down. The sun was hitting the red and orange leaves and I rounded a corner and saw a brilliant display of sumac and I immediately thought of this next song. Here is Ann Arbors Dick Siegel with his wonderful tune from his 1994 release “Snap”. The Tune is called “When the Sumac is on Fire“.
