Hi. I'm Steven Johnson from Michigan Folk Live. I'd like to welcome you to another MichiganFolkLive podcast. This is a series of podcasts presented by Michigan Folk Live, features both National touring acts and local Michigan Artists. With this podcast we are going focus primarily on artists who are touring Michigan in March  2008.

Intro – Laura Bates & Brandon Foote – Shenandoah

LAURA BATES AND BRANDON FOOTE: Jubilee

MJ Bishop

The is first artist MJ Bishop grew up in the small town of St Ignace in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Her exposure to music began with piano at age 10, and she moved on to play trumpet in grade school and high school. Music at home included jazz standards, Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and every family celebration included singing (lots of harmonizing!) and playing into the wee hours of the morning.

She now makes her home in Seattle Washington, but its clear from her song lyrics that Michigan has never left her heart. The last 10 years have been busy for Bishop as she assembled a band, maintained a full performance schedule, began touring as a solo act, and continued songwriting. In 2003, she joined local Americana group ThorNton Creek, expanding her instrument repertoire to include mandolin and accordion.

Chris Buhalis

I’ve been hearing a lot about this Ann Arbor musician, Chris Buhalis, several people whom I respect had spoken highly of him, but hadn’t had a chance to see Chris perform. I was supposed to see him in January at the Black Crystal Café but that show was cancelled. I finally got to hear Chris a couple of weeks ago when he opened for Justin Townes Earl at Calahans in Auburn Hills. I’ve got to tell you, as an opener he was worth the price of admission on his own.

Dick Siegel

I finally caught up with this artist with his full band “The Brando’s” on Memorial weekend in Traverse City at “The Inside-out Gallery”. While I had previously seen him perform as a Solo Acoustic act at the “Under the Pines” house concert in Haslett, Michigan, it was great to hear the full live band, which more closely approximated his wonderful studio performances. The artist is Ann Arbor’s Dick Siegel, a fabulous songwriters whose repertoire include, Jazz, Blues, Country, Rock, Folk, A cappella and more.
