Beaucoup Blue

Beaucoup Blue is the Philadelphia based duo of David and Adrian Mowry. Father and son have been performing their music strongly rooted in the blues, up and down the eastern seaboard, and most recently here in the mid-west. They were part of a benefit concert to support the Trinity House Theater, and also performed several other Michigan concert dates. They played the 6 and 12 string guitar, dobro, and slide guitar, and their voices exhibited the tight harmonies that family members sometimes excel at.  I enjoyed them immensely and can’t wait until they return. Here they are performing a song they described as their favorite murder ballad, and I think it may just be mine as well. Here is Beaucoup Blue performing “Four in the Morning” from their release “Hearts At Home”.

His traditional recordings are catalogued by the Library of Congress Office of Folklife, and by the Library and the Archives of the State of Michigan. Beoga

Next we’re going to get a little Celtic influence from the Irish Band Beoga. Beoga is an Irish word for “Lively” and having seen this Irish band perform at The Ark last spring I can tell you they are aptly named. Here is a song from their 2007 release “Mischief” a traditional American ballad “Factory Girl”. It’s a song about a young women who pleads with her lover to take her away to a better life.

May Erlewine

May Erlewine, also know to many of you as Daisy May, is a true Michigan treasure. May’s been compared to Patsy Cline, Patty Griffin, and Emmy Lou Harris and while that’s highly complementary I find her voice and music to be whollyJill jack, Mustar, Neil Woodward her own. Some of her music is reminiscent of old time country music before it became pop music with a hat and some of her music is reminiscent of the powerful folk ballads of the 60’s

Thomas Fraser
You may have already heard me tell the story of Thomas Fraser. Thomas was a Scottish Fisherman who was born and lived on the remote Shetland Island, Burra, off the coast of Scotland. Thomas taught himself to play guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin, and as a young man he was greatly influenced by the Country and Blues he heard on Armed Forces Radio. Over the years Thomas became renown through out his small fishing community and whenever Thomas would perform at a public gathering word would spread from house to house until a large crowd formed.

This story might have died with Thomas, who passed away prematurely in 1970 at the age of 50, from the effects of a fishing accident. But in 1953, soon after the remote Scottish Island where he lived received electricity, Thomas bought a reel to reel tape recorder. He began taping the Country, Blues, Jazz and traditional standards he loved, at home, in his kitchen. Eventually he had 1000’s of recordings of which 600 survived to be discovered by his Grandson Karl Simpson. It was Karl Simpson who first heard these recordings and realized the musical legacy they contained and had them lovingly remastered. It is with the permission of Karl Simpson that I bring you today, Thomas Fraser performing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from his kitchen in the Shetland Islands.
