Hi. I'm Steven Johnson from Michigan Folk Live. I'd like to welcome you to MichiganFolkLive’s inaugural podcast. This is the first of a series of podcasts presented by Michigan Folk Live, featuring both National touring acts and local Michigan Artists. With this first podcast we are going focus on the talented group of people who call Michigan home.

Annie and Rod Capps ~ In this Town

This first song is from a Husband and Wife duo Annie and Rod Capps. The song titled “In This Town” is a clever tune about a women musing about moving to a new town and starting over. Where she can reinvent herself and be anyone she wants to be. This song is the title song of their most recent release, which of course is available on Michiganfolklive.com. Let’s listen Annie and Rod Capps performing “In This Town”.

Stonecross- Rathlin Island

Next we are going to hear a  song by the Michigan Celtic duo,  Stonecross, showcasing alto Susan O’Rourke on guitar and her partner Zig Zeitler on the bouzouki. If you are not familiar with Stonecross, they also run a wonderful concert venue in Saginaw named the White Crow Conservatory. If you get an opportunity to see a show at the Crow make sure you take it as it is a fabulous venue with lots of great musicians appearing there. In addition the White Crow Conservatory is a great place to get a music lesson and they carry a fine line of musical instruments.

So here is Stonecross performing a song written by former Detroiter Cathie Ryan. This song,  “Rathlin Island 1847”, is a story of the great Irish famine and the mass migration to the Americas by many in Ireland. Rathlin Island was hit very hard by this migration and a thriving community of 1200 people was eventually reduced to fewer than 100. This song depicts the great sadness and sense of loss felt by those who were forced by their circumstances to leave their home and also the few you were left behind.
